MISSION STATEMENT
The objectives of the PLAY:stl Music Festival & Conference are twofold: (1) Increase awareness of the St. Louis area as a musical hub, rich with talented musicians and music-loving fans, and (2) Provide festival performers and attendees with a broader audience as well as educational and networking opportunities to increase their career success.
Since the Mississippi River Music Festival dried up over a decade ago, St. Louis has been clamoring for a festival and conference geared toward emerging artists. And festival opportunities and exposure for independent bands has grown scarce of late, what with the disappearance of Indianapolis' Midwest Music Summit and Colorado's South Park Music Festival, to name but two. To that end, we have identified an opportunity for both the St. Louis community and independent musicians and music fans nationwide to come together for exposure, entertainment and networking.
PLAY:stl is a community event, incorporating the ideas and efforts of a number of local musicians and movers 'n' shakers. Behind the PLAY:stl Music Festival & Conference is PLAYBACK:stl, the five-plus-year-old St. Louis-based music and entertainment magazine founded and run by Laura Hamlett and Jim Dunn, in print four and a half years before going web-only last fall. More than just a collection of words, PLAYBACK:stl has long been involved in booking shows and hosting events, drawing attention to the local music community and independent artists for many years. A festival was the next logical step.
Also driving PLAY:stl is Bigfatcat, a local management, public relations and graphic design firm. An offshoot of PLAYBACK:stl, Bigfatcat focuses on booking and advancing artist careers.
